How can Dr. B help you save on YouFit gym membership?

If exercise can help you treat or prevent your medical condition, you may be able to use funds from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for a YouFit gym membership.

HSAs and FSAs are tax-advantaged accounts. If you have a high-deductible health insurance plan, you can open an HSA through a bank or other financial institution. FSAs are offered by employers as a benefit program alongside employer-sponsored health insurance. (Here’s more about how HSAs + FSAs work.)

With HSA/FSA accounts, you don’t pay income tax on any funds you deposit into the account and use to pay for qualified medical expenses. So depending on how much you would have paid towards your federal and state taxes, you’ll save 20-40% off each medical expense you pay with your HSA/FSA funds!

Most people use that pre-tax HSA/FSA money to pay for insurance premium costs, doctor visit copays and prescription medication expenses. You can find a wide variety of eligible expenses at online HSA stores. You can also use your funds in pharmacies to buy over-the-counter medications, pain relief, recovery tools (like splints and braces) and more!

So I can use my FSA/HSA for gym memberships?

Maybe. Exercise fees do not automatically qualify as FSA or HSA-eligible expenses.

You can only use your HSA/FSA funds for gym memberships, fitness classes and personal training fees if exercise helps prevent or treat your medical condition. Even then, you can’t just use your HSA or FSA card to pay for those costs or submit receipts to your HSA/FSA administrator to get them reimbursed from your account.

Instead, a doctor or other licensed provider must write a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) or medical justification letter detailing how an exercise regimen treats or prevents your condition. Once you have that letter, you can submit it and any (new) related exercise receipts to your HSA/FSA administrator to get the cost reimbursed from your HSA/FSA account.

How to get a Letter of Medical Necessity online for YouFit

Dr. B has officially teamed with YouFit to make it more convenient for qualifying patients to get a Letter of Medical Necessity online!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Go to YouFit’s partner page and start a $15 consultation. You can start any day of the year—weekends + holidays included, no video meeting required!
  2. Answer some questions about your health history, condition and symptoms. Once you’re finished, a licensed provider will review your answers within three business hours. If you qualify, they’ll email you a Letter of Medical Necessity and a few exercise instructions straight to your inbox.
  3. Pay for a new YouFit membership—and save your receipt! Your YouFit membership fees are HSA/FSA eligible as long as you buy or renew your membership on or after your Letter of Medical Necessity date.
  4. Find your HSA/FSA administrator online and visit their claims or reimbursement section. Submit your Letter of Medical Necessity and YouFit receipt(s).
  5. Wait for them to process your claim and transfer the funds from your HSA/FSA account!

Your Letter of Medical Necessity is valid for 12 months. You can use the same letter for all receipts made within those 12 months, but you’ll have to repeat the submission process.

How much can you save on YouFit with HSA/FSA?

You’ll probably get your entire YouFit membership cost reimbursed. Because HSAs and FSAs reduce your taxable income—keeping more money in your account to spend—your YouFit discount comes from what you would have paid towards your income taxes.

So depending on your tax bracket, you’ll save 20-40% off your YouFit membership because you paid for it with tax-free funds! Go you!
