When can you use HSA/FSA for ClassPass credits?
HSA and FSA accounts are tax-advantaged savings accounts where you can reserve income to pay for qualified medical expenses like prescription medications and doctor copays. (Get the details about how HSAs and FSAs work in this Dr. B article.)
You can’t use HSA/FSA funds for everyday medical items (such as cold medicines) or items that contribute to your general wellness.
But if you have a medical condition that can be managed or treated by exercise, you can pay for related fitness purchases with HSA/FSA funds.
That doesn’t mean you can just swipe your HSA/FSA card at your gym or submit your Pilates receipts for reimbursement.
To pay for exercise fees with HSA/FSA funds, a licensed provider must write a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) detailing how exercise treats your medical condition. Once you have that letter, you can submit it to your HSA/FSA administrator with fitness receipts and get the receipts reimbursed from your HSA/FSA funds.
How to get a Letter of Medical Necessity for ClassPass
ClassPass credits can be used to pay for services like salon and spa visits, too. But you can only use HSA/FSA funds to pay for qualified medical expenses.
That means you can only use your ClassPass credits on fitness classes. Otherwise, your receipts won’t qualify for reimbursement under HSA/FSA withdrawal rules.
To make sure your credit plans remain eligible, Dr. B and ClassPass will ask you to confirm that you’ll only use your credits for fitness classes.
- Take a consultation: Go to hidrb.com/and/classpass and start a $15 chat consultation. You’ll answer a few questions about your health history and current conditions—and confirm that you’ll use your ClassPass credits for fitness classes.
- Wait for confirmation: A licensed provider will review your consultation. If you qualify, they’ll email your Letter of Medical Necessity to your inbox within one business day.
- Save your next receipt: Hold onto the receipt from your next ClassPass billing cycle— and make sure to only use your credits for fitness classes.
- Submit your receipt for reimbursement: Log into your HSA/FSA administrator’s website and find their claims or reimbursement section. Submit your Letter of Medical Necessity and ClassPass receipt.
- Wait for confirmation: Depending on your administrator, it may take a few days for them to finalize your claim and transfer the funds between your chosen accounts. Contact our support team if they have any questions or need more information.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:
- You can only file receipts for purchases made on or after the date on your Letter of Medical Necessity. In other words, you won’t be able to get reimbursed for receipts dated before the date on your letter.
- Your Letter of Medical Necessity is valid for 12 months. You can file the letter with ClassPass receipts dated any time within this period.
- Keep a copy of your Letter of Medical Necessity and ClassPass receipts with your financial records. If you ever get audited by the IRS, you’ll need to confirm that you only spent ClassPass credits purchased with HSA/FSA funds on fitness classes.
How much can you save on ClassPass with your HSA?
As long as you have enough funds in your HSA/FSA account, you should get the entire cost of your ClassPass membership reimbursed from your pre-tax funds.
How much you’ll save on those credits comes from what you would have paid in income tax. So you’ll save the amount of your income that you would have instead paid into your state and federal taxes—20-40% off your ClassPass fees, depending on your tax bracket.
